Database Support
An integral part of any website is the ability to update the content on your site dynamically - this allows you to present your visitors with current articles and new prices, to allow them to search your site, and to personalise their accounts - all without requiring you to update each page manually.
Using databases is the easiest way to achieve this. You can enter data in to the database tables, and display this information selectively in a number of different formats and styles.
Which Databases Do Hostway Support?
Hostway offers support for three different types of database:
1. Access (.mdb) and Access 2007 (.accdb)
- A Microsoft product, Access is a part of the Microsoft Office Suite, or is available separately. Access, is a relational database, which means that it organises its information into logical groups (tables), which can be related to each other.
- Access is generally used on the desktop, but Access is a good choice if you want to use data from an existing Microsoft Office product or if you do not have large amounts of data. All Hostway Windows plans at Gold level and above support Microsoft Access (.mdb) and Access 2007 (.accdb) databases. You can connect to your Access database using an ODBC connection (DSN connection) or a DSN-less connection. You can use ASP or ASP.net to query your database.
2. MySQL
- A multi-user, multi-threaded SQL database server. MySQL offers speed, robustness and ease of use. Hostway's MySQL databases are hosted on a dedicated MySQL server, ensuring server resources are devoted to database processing for faster performance. MySQL is also an open-source product and can be downloaded and installed on your PC for free (for private use), from here.
- At Hostway, we provide differing numbers of MySQL databases on all Linux plans at Gold level and above. Each database has a quota of 35MB, although additional space can be added for an extra fee. To query your MySQL database, you can use the programming language, PHP.
3. MS SQL Server 2005
- Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is a comprehensive, integrated data management and analysis software that enables organizations to reliably manage mission-critical information and confidently run today’s increasingly complex business applications. SQL Server 2005 allows companies to gain greater insight from their business information and achieve faster results for a competitive advantage.
- At Hostway your MSSQL database will be hosted on a dedicated MSSQL server. This ensures that the entire server resource is devoted to database processing for faster performance. The standard database size is 30 MB (20 MB database with a 10 MB log). Languages such as ASP and ColdFusion can be used to query the data in your Microsoft SQL Server database.
- Hostway recommends the use of SQL Server databases when you are using an e-commerce facility on your site and taking customer details. This is because the transactional engine is much more secure and the database is faster than Access.

How Can I Use A Database on a Hosting Package?
Customers that would like to use a database on their website can do quickly and easily. To add a SQL Server or MySQL database, just go into the Website Tools section of your Site Control Panel, and add the feature. For Access databases, you can upload an Access .mdb file to the 'database' folder in your webspace.
